Thomas Pooley played a crucial rôle in the establishment of the present-day town of Surbiton, but was hounded into bankruptcy by the Kingston establishment. He was seen as an outsider and not entirely respectable. Thereafter he was effectively written out of history.

The research done by June Sampson and later by Richard Statham has restored him to his rightful place in the history of the area. The Wikipedia article is based largely on their work.
