A hundred years ago today, on 27 August 1917, my great-uncle, 242424 Private Charles Percival Willis Palmer, died in Belgium. He has no known grave, but he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial (see panels 75-77), so he must have been engaged in the Battle of Passchendaele.

I am too young to have met him, but one of my uncles who was his godson remembered him with affection. To my uncle Private Palmer was "Uncle Percy" and he was the youngest of the six children of Charles and Annie (née Willis) Palmer. The eldest of their children, Annie Beatrice, was my grandmother.
