Doodlebug

A model of a V-1 flying bomb or "doodlebug"

My earliest memories are of Scotland, where we went to live in the summer of 1943, but by the summer of 1944 we were back in Slough and living in Wexham Road. I recall that one fine summer's day we had gone to an open-air event near our temporary home. Somebody drew everyone's attention to a doodlebug which was flying more or less due south a little way to the west of where we were. I have an abiding memory of sensing the apprehension of the adults and it may very well have been the first time that I ever felt unsafe. They were unhappy about this intruder which was flying by, but there was nothing they could do about it.

Afterwards my parents learned that the pilotless aircraft had fallen on Windsor. Years later my sister, who is older than I am and also remembers the incident, researched this particular V-1 and discovered that it fell in West Windsor, not far from where she now lives.[Note 1]
