Here are some examples of the expression The Olympic Games in various Romance languages. The list highlights the similarities between some adjacent languages, but also the vast differences between languages at different ends of the range. I notice that the plural in -s suddenly disappears as we move into the Gallo-Italian languages. (However, it is found in Sardinian, which is definitely distinct from Italian.)
- Portuguese
- Os Jogos Olímpicos
- Spanish
- Los Juegos Olímpicos
- Catalan
- Els Jocs Olímpics
- Occitan
- Los Jòcs Olimpics
- French
- Les Jeux olympiques
- Romansh
- Ils Gieus Olimpics
- Piedmontese
- Ij gieugh olìmpich
- Italian
- I Giochi olimpici
- Sicilian
- Li Jochi Ulìmpici or Li Jòcura Olìmpici[1]
- Romanian
- Jocurile[2] Olimpice[3]
Notes - There are dialectal differences and one form leans towards Romanian somewhat.
- Jocuri is the plural of joc and the suffix -le is a definite article.
- In Romanian joc is a neuter noun and the neuter forms of adjectives are the same as the masculine in the singular and as the feminine in the plural. Hermaphrodite adjectives!
