Introduction
When I lived in France in the early 60s, Johnny Hallyday, who was as French as Dick Rivers of Les Chats Sauvages, was a big name on the rock scene. He came to earn himself the nickname "The French Elvis", and, like Elvis, he could sing ballads, as well as rock. One of his more popular early ballads was Toi Qui Regrettes, a rather bitter song about the end of the end of an affair.
Oh, toi qui regrettes
De m'avoir fait souffrir
Oh, toi qui regrettes
Nos anciens souvenirs
Oh, toi qui regrettes
Aujourd'hui ton départ
Oui, toi qui regrettes
Pourquoi viens-tu si tard?
Je t'aimais comme un fou
Tu m'as fait les cent coups
Tu as griffé mon cœur
Tant pis pour toi, ma mie,
Pour moi tout est fini
Le temps a su sécher mes pleurs
Oh, toi qui regrettes
Toi qui m'aimes sans espoir
Oui, toi qui regrettes
Pourquoi viens-tu si tard?
Oh, you who regret
That you made me suffer
Oh, you who regret
Our old memories
Oh, you who regret
Today that you left
Yes, you who regret
Why do you come so late?
I loved you like crazy
You beat me up
You clawed my heart
Too bad for you, my dear,
For me it's all over
Time has now dried my tears
Oh, you who regret
You who love me without hope
Yes, you who regret
Why do you come so late?
